Genetic test results should be disclosed in person. During this meeting the results should be explained, the patient's reaction should be discussed, and a management plan should be outlined. Written information should be provided so the patient can review the material at a later date. Written material also helps with explaining this information to other family members. Medical management options should always be discussed regardless of the genetic test result. At a minimum, the patient will need to follow the appropriate cancer screening recommendations for the general population. The patient should have a clear understanding about how their genetic test result will or will not impact their medical management. Information on medical management can be found within each disease-specific section.

The following presentation reviews key points to consider when interpreting results from genetic testing for hereditary cancer. While the main points are covered on each slide, more detailed information is contained in the associated notes pages.
